I have so much I am thankful for this year. In celebration, I thought I'd share a pattern with you. This hat pattern is one that I wrote for my shop. Furry yarn was extremely popular at the time. I would give this pattern free with the purchase of furry yarn. Today, it's just free. No purchase necessary. Enjoy.

Fuzzy Hat is knit in the round on large needles with just 66 yards of bulky weight furry yarn. A sort of 'in your face' statement to the person who told me I couldn't make toys on Passap knitting machines. It was published in Machine Knitters Source magazine. I will never forget the day the magazine arrived in the mail with my pattern in it. I was so excited, and proud of myself! It validated my idea that I actually know what I'm doing when it comes to knitting.

I never did get around to translating it to the Japanese made machines. Probably because no one ever asked me to. It was fun while it lasted. I kind of miss those days when I was designing the toys. It was challenging to take something that pretty much had to be knitted flat and turn it into something three dimensional.

In 1999 I bought the needle craft shop in town and didn't have time for designing machine knitting patterns any more. Running a shop is a full time job. I found myself knitting models for the shop, and that was about all I had time for

The doll is about 18 inches tall and made with 3/15 weight acrylic yarn and stuffed with polyester fiberfill. She as some soft sculpture on her for toes, fingers, her face, and even a tiny little tush. Her hair is made of yarn that is sewn on and I have detailed instructions for how to do that. It comes with the pattern for the romper she's wearing too.

If you should happen to download and make this doll, I'd love to see pictures when you're done.

Linky-->     Precious Friend for Passap

Live long and prosper. \\//

A Pillow Pickup for Machine Knitting

This pattern is for machine knitting.

Pillow Pickup by Precious Knits

It was only natural that after making a car, I thought to make a truck. Before purchasing my first machine, I bought a few magazines. One of them had a pattern for a wonderful teddy bear in it for standard gauge Japanese machines. However, in the end, I bought a Passap double bed machine, which works differently than the Japanese ones. I still wanted to make that teddy bear though. So I asked my teacher about it (my Passap came with 10 lessons) and she said "Oh, you can't make stuffed animals on a Passap." I was quite taken aback by that. I thought the statement ludicrous. I determined to figure out how to do it on my own.

The magazine with the teddy bear pattern disappeared. To this day, I don't know where it is. So I ended up figuring out a way to make one on my own. Curly was the result. I took him to my very next lesson and pointed out that stuffed animals can too be made on a Passap.

This particular pattern, however , is not written for the Passap machine. (I'm not sure I'll even put it up here because I don't think there'd be an interest.) Japanese machine owners kept asking me to convert the pattern for their machines, so I did. For 4.5mm standard gauge knitting machines, I present:

Curly the Bear by Precious Knits

Knit in 3/15 (fingering) weight acrylic, there are instructions for two sizes of Curly. The pieces are knitted flat, then sewn. Polyester fiberfill is used for stuffing. The hair is knit on the machine, then sewn on to the head. I used purchased shank back eyes because once they are on they are impossible to take off, but one could embroider eyes on just as easily. Either way, they should be safe for babies.

Linky --->   Curly the Bear

I do my best to make these patterns accurate, but even still there might be errors. (At one point I actually owned 9 of them. Now I have just 4- my favorites and the ones I would actually use.) I wrote and published a few patterns. This one appeared in the now defunct Machine Knitters Source magazine. Later, under the name Precious Knits, I sold it at machine knitting seminars (also teaching classes) and by mail order. I have decided to offer the few patterns here that I wrote for free to all those machine knitters who are still hanging in there. I'm starting with this one.

The Pillow Car is written for the 4.5 standard gauge machines like Brother, Studio, Silver-Reed, and Toyota. I know most of these machines are no longer being manufactured, but there are still a lot of people out there who own and use them.

Finished size is about 10 inches long. The little people are 5 inches tall. Yarn used is a 3/15 (fingering) weight acrylic. The toy is completely machine washable if you use washable yarn, and safe for babies.

Linky ----->    The Pillow Car

I Won't Do That Again.

Well, I learned something. I have shortened it, written it for knitting on 2 circular needles rather than double points, and improved the instructions so it fits better, taking care of the problems I had with the other pattern.

It features 2x2 rib for the cuffs and top with small Entrelac blocks in between. Finished length is 9 inches.

This design works best with yarns that have long color repeats. The model was made using Ty-Dy Socks from Knit One Crochet Too. Other yarns I would recommend are Noro Kureyon Sock, Mini Mochi from Crystal Palace Yarns, Poems Sock by Wisdom Yarns, and Zauberball by Schoppel-Wolle. (I'm curious how it would look using some of the Jacquard yarns, though.)

Click on the link to download:

A Rainbow for My Hands

I do my best to make these patterns accurate, but even still there might be errors. It features a 2 by 2 ribbed cuff, a simple twisted stitch cable pattern in the leg, slip stitch heel, and standard toe shaping.
Sizes: Ladies/Mens Medium

Close up of stitch pattern

Click here for the PDF file:

Linky -->  Franks Little Cables

I test knitted this pattern several times, but even still there might be errors. It's turning out to be a very popular one, so I decided I'm going to repost it here, with the patterns, where it ought to be.

~~~~~~~~~~
Being a member of Ravelry, I get to read all kinds of wonderful information on the subject of knitting, crochet, spinning, etc. It's a veritable fountain of all things knitterly. However, there is one thing that pops up in the forums every so often that just makes my blood boil. The myth that acrylic can not be blocked. I've found the hand knitting community seems to believe this to be true (not so in the home machine knitting community). Even the celebrity designers do.
Wrong-in epic proportions!
Acrylic CAN be blocked. Let me repeat that.
Acrylic CAN be blocked!
In fact, it should be blocked. From my observations, I would say someone along the line made an acrylic sweater, blanket, or whatnot, blocked it in their usual 'wet blocking' manner and it didn't work. Therefore, acrylic doesn't block-warn everybody. No, it can be blocked. You're just doing it wrong.
I'm gonna tell you how to do it right.
First of all, as I said above, acrylic projects need to be blocked. It gives the yarn it's final finish. In other words, the yarn itself will look much better if it's blocked. We all know how sad an unblocked acrylic garment looks. All wrinkly, uneven, and kind of like it has morning bed head. I sometimes think acrylic gets it's bad reputation amongst the wool lovers because of this very situation. (Never mind they didn't block it right to begin with.)
Acrylic is basically a form of plastic. It requires steam blocking. It's the way it's done in the professional garment industry. It's the way we should be doing it.
It's quite easy to do. You pin your pieces out on your blocking board to the measurements required, making sure the straight edges are straight and even, and the curves are curved properly. If your gauge is just a little bit off so the piece is a little too small, you can stretch it out to where it's supposed to be. The change will be permanent once the blocking is complete.
I use blocking wires for this purpose. I love my blocking wires. In fact, I consider blocking wires the best way to pin a garment out for blocking. Takes way less pins, you don't end up with those scalloped wavy edges, and it's much more accurate for blocking to schematic measurements. Make sure, if you get some, to get a set that has the thin flexible wires for doing curves as well as the regular straight ones. Curves need blocking too.
For the most part, I usually pin things wrong side up. However, if the fabric has a deeply textured pattern in it, like cables and twisted stitches, I will pin it right side up to prevent the texture from being flattened.
After pinning it out, you steam it gently. I own a Jiffy Steamer for the purpose because knitting is my obsession. However, a good steam iron works just fine. Make sure you hover over the garment. Do not touch the fabric with the iron or it will melt. Do not over-steam it either or you'll kill it. While steaming I will gently pat the fabric with my fingers to smooth it out. That's pat, not slide. Sliding your hand over it will cause it to stretch where it shouldn't. If there are cables, I'll pinch them a bit so they stand out a little bit more.
Killing is another one of those misunderstood issues. Killing acrylic means to overheat it to the point that it melts enough to lose it's elasticity. Just steaming it a bit won't kill acrylic.
Sometimes a person wants to kill it on purpose, in which case, kill away. Killed acrylic has a wonderful silky drape that is quite pleasant, and unique. I have on occasion killed some acrylic on purpose for just this reason. It makes wonderful pleated skirts this way.
Here are some comparison photos of a baby cardigan I'm currently making. Please click on them to get enlarged versions.
Not blocked
A little wrinkly, the stitches are uneven, the sides want twist, the ruffle wants to curl in an unattractive way, the button band curves and the edges inside the button band are puckered.
close up
Blocked
The fabric is smoother, the button band is straight, the inside edges don't pucker, the sides are straight and even, and the ruffle lays as it should.
Close up of same corner as above.
Now, lets see side by side views.
Close up
Which one would you rather be seen in? (Assuming you're the same size as a 6 month old baby of course) I don't want to hear any more "Acrylic can't be blocked". Okay?
By the way, I steam block almost everything. Wool responds beautifully to steam blocking. I can't stand wet blocking. It's a poor and inefficient way to finish the fabric. If the professional garment industry can steam block, so can we.
Have a great day.
~~~~~~~~~~

3/23/2011 Update

I am constantly being asked if steam blocking acrylic is permanent, or will it have to be reblocked after washing? The answer is it's permanent. It was our most popular free pattern, and is one of my all time favorite lace stitch patterns. Though it was written for mohair, I've found this pattern works well with ANY yarn from worsted weight to bulky. I've used sport and even fingering weight too by doubling the strands. So it's pretty versatile. It knits up quickly, and makes a great gift item.

Materials: 200 yards Mohair, or 200 yards of any bulky weight yarn. I call them the Happiness Socks because they made me so happy while I was knitting them. I knit these socks for a photo contest that is being held during the Summer of Socks knit along. I hauled these socks up into the north Idaho mountains in search of the perfect 'Vacation Sock' photo. I had a blast doing it too. I won't know until September if my photo has won or not.

In the meantime, I decided to write up the pattern so I could share it with everyone.

These socks are knit on 2 circular needles. If you do not knit in this method, than feel free to adjust accordingly. After all, a pattern is really just a suggestion.

The Happiness Socks

Close up view of stitch pattern.

Click here for the PDF file:

Linky -->  The Happiness Socks

I pick up and knit my gussets a little differently than most people. You learn how to cast on, knit, and purl, but no binding off, though if you wanted to bind off, then thread a yarn in the edge stitches to gather the top, you certainly can. Techniques used are stockinette stitch, K2tog decrease, and ribbing. At the time Ponchos were extremely popular because Martha Stewart wore one the day she got out of prison.

Most of my customers used 5 different novelty yarns and a regular smooth yarn, but the model in the picture used 18 different yarns of various thicknesses and textures. Upon learning how to do bead knitting I was drawn into needle bead weaving because I could make such cool straps for my bead knitted amulet bags. Well, my daughter was intrigued with my beading. Especially when I started learning the Peyote stitch. In fact, she has become quite an accomplished beader since then.

During one of our conversations we talked about making a pendant that would be sort of like a banner with a dragon on it, in the medieval kind of way. (Both my daughters are very into dragons.) Daughter's birthday was coming up so I thought I'd try my hand at creating something like that in Peyote as a gift for her. After several days of weaving and un-weaving and swearing and cursing-due to what was my lack of knowledge in Peyote stitch techniques, I finally shouted at the Fates "I could knit this faster!" Thus, an idea was born (and husband was startled out of his wits). Four hours later, I'd made this.

These are the instructions for making the pendant. You get to come up with your own idea for the strap, only because the instructions for this strap were on a web site that no longer exists. I hope you enjoy making it.

Dragon Banner Necklace

A knit beaded pendant

Finished Size: Approximately 1½ inches wide by 3½ inches long.

Materials: 1 ball of size 8 pearl cotton, 1 hank (28 grams) of size 11 seed beads, a gold dragon charm 2½ inches long, one necklace the length of your choice that will fit through a half inch casing.
